Athletes need to recover faster and full fitness is a must. But while sporting demands are skyrocketing, many athletes are still coming to terms with what it takes to be an elite sportsperson.
So much so that city hospitals are seeing a spike in the number of sports-related injuries to athletes of all disciplines. Dr Raghu Nagaraj, consultant arthroscopy and sports medicine specialist, Hosmat Hospital said, "A couple of years ago we used to see only 15 to 18 surgeries a month, but these days we perform close to 45 surgeries a month... What is missing in the city, however, is a holistic approach in terms of having a specialist sports psychologist, surgeon and physiotherapist under a single wing for better access to treatment and care."
The rise in the number of sports injuries has also seen an increase in the scope of sports medicine in the city. These days, most corporate hospitals have a separate department for sport medicine.
